What a fantastic feeling! Nyugat.hu has turned 25!
In 1999, a team of young people was thinking about how to start a free media outlet. However, they didn't have much money - which hasn't changed since then, which is why we are launching our fundraising campaign that runs until December 22, 2024. The individuals who were brainstorming together back then went in many different directions. (Just like many colleagues who have worked with us over the past quarter-century and our newsroom has become a kind of training workshop.) But Nyugat.hu has remained a free, independent media outlet and we are still proud of everything the term "Nyugat" represents.
We could tell you countless stories about the numerous pitfalls and crises we have survived to reach our 25th year. But here we are! We are Hungary's second oldest news portal and the largest independent media outlet outside Budapest.
We are pleased that based on reader surveys, you consider our content credible in this world full of fake news, and we are your number one news source in this region. Not to mention that in 2023, together with Telex and Partizán, we received the Hungarian Press Award.
